Originally founded by the Dutch at the end of the 17th century, the winery remained relatively unimportant for nearly 300 years. Only in 1992 did L'Avenir become a serious competitor to other South African wineries. It began specializing primarily in two grape varieties, two crucial to South Africa's winemaking heritage: Chenin Blanc and Pinotage. This proved to be a golden opportunity for L'Avenir.
